The Power of Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Today, our nation celebrates a remarkable milestone—250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a moment to reflect not only on where we’ve been, but on the values that continue to define us.
The American story has never been written by one person alone. It has been built by ordinary people who believed in hard work, opportunity, resilience, and the simple idea that we are stronger when we work together.
At Solidarity Community Federal Credit Union, that belief isn’t just something we celebrate—it’s who we are.
Our story began in 1954 with a simple act of generosity.
A group of Delco Electronics employees wanted to help a co-worker buy a car. Every week, they each contributed just a quarter, collecting their money in a cigar box until they had enough to make that dream a reality.
It wasn’t a business plan.
It wasn’t about profits.
It was neighbors helping neighbors.
That small act of cooperation became the foundation of Solidarity Community Federal Credit Union. What started with a handful of co-workers pooling their resources grew into a financial cooperative built on the belief that people accomplish more when they support one another
More than 70 years later, that spirit still guides everything we do.
Today, Solidarity proudly serves members across Howard, Tipton, Clinton, Cass, Carroll, Miami, and White Counties. While we’ve grown far beyond our Delco roots, our mission remains remarkably similar: to create a place where people belong, where financial services are built around people—not profit—and where every member has a voice because every member is an owner.
That idea is deeply American.
Throughout our nation’s 250-year history, some of our greatest accomplishments have come from people choosing cooperation over competition, community over isolation, and hope over fear. Whether building neighborhoods, starting businesses, volunteering in our communities, or lending a helping hand during difficult times, Americans have always found strength in working together.
We see that same spirit every day.
- It’s the young couple opening their first savings account while dreaming of homeownership.
- The student preparing for college or trade school.
- The family financing a reliable vehicle to get to work.
- The small business owner investing in the future.
- The retiree enjoying the peace of mind that comes from years of careful planning.
Every financial goal tells a story. Every member has a journey. And we’re honored to be part of those moments.
Credit unions have always been different because they were founded on a simple belief: people helping people. That’s more than a slogan. It’s a promise that financial success should be accessible, relationships should matter, and communities are stronger when everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
As America celebrates 250 years, we’re reminded that our nation’s strength has never come solely from its institutions. It comes from its people—the people who choose to show up for one another, who invest in their communities, and who believe tomorrow can be better than today.
That’s the same spirit that inspired a group of Delco employees to place quarters into a cigar box back in 1954.
It’s the same spirit that continues to shape Solidarity Community Federal Credit Union today.
And it’s the same spirit that gives us hope for the next 250 years.
Thank you for allowing us to be part of your story. We are proud of where we came from, grateful for the communities we serve, and excited for all that lies ahead.
Because when people come together with a shared purpose, extraordinary things happen.
