Financial Literacy in Action: Turning a Budget into $860
Financial literacy is about more than learning how to create a budget, it’s about putting those skills to work in real life.
Recently, Solidarity partnered with Gilead House for a hands-on financial literacy lesson leading up to their First Friday bake sale.
Before heading to the store, we sat down together for a budgeting class. We talked about how to make the most of the money available, compare prices, choose what’s most affordable, decide between wants and needs, and consider how supply costs would ultimately affect the money earned from the sale.
Then, it was time to put those lessons into action! The group used what we’d discussed to shop for the supplies they needed and prepare for their bake sale. Solidarity provided a budget of $150.
And their hard work paid off — they raised $860!
We’re incredibly proud of what they accomplished, but even more excited about the skills they were able to practice along the way.
At Solidarity, we believe financial literacy is most meaningful when people have opportunities to use what they’ve learned. Partnerships like this allow us to take financial education beyond the classroom and turn it into real-world experience.
Congratulations to everyone at Gilead House on a very successful bake sale! ❤️
