Solidarity FCU Brings Financial Literacy to Taylor High School

This spring, Solidarity Community Federal Credit Union partnered with Taylor High School to lead a 9-week financial literacy course for the senior class. The program was designed to help students develop strong money management skills and feel confident about their financial futures.

Each week, we focused on real-world financial topics such as:

  • How checking and savings accounts work

  • Responsible debit card use and online banking tools

  • Saving early, compound interest, and investment basics

  • Credit scores, loans, and managing debt

  • Avoiding overdraft fees, scams, and fraud

By the end of the program, students were completing hands-on simulations like depositing checks, paying bills, and creating personal budgets—practical experiences that brought classroom lessons to life.

Teaching Financial Skills to Students of All Backgrounds

One of the most rewarding aspects of the course was getting to know the students. They came from a variety of backgrounds—some worked part-time jobs, some helped manage family budgets, and others were just beginning to think about what financial independence looks like after high school.

Their unique experiences led to great discussions and thoughtful questions, proving that financial literacy isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s about giving young people the tools to succeed, no matter their starting point.

16 New Accounts Opened—and a Brighter Financial Future

To celebrate their hard work, students who completed the course and met participation criteria were invited to open a new account with Solidarity FCU. We even provided starter scholarship funds to kick off their savings journey.

We’re proud to share that 16 students opened accounts—a meaningful step toward real-world financial success.
